Air pollution causes 6.7 million premature deaths each year. The American Lung Association gave Philadelphia and Harrisburg F grades for ozone and Particulate Matter pollution in 2024 and 2025.
The zip codes we are monitoring in West Philadelphia and Harrisburg (19104, 19131, 19139, 17102, 17103, 17104) have some of the highest adult asthma prevalence in the State and Nation.
We have three primary goals in this project:
1. Determine Spatial/temporal patterns of pollution across these redlined neighborhoods of West Philly/Harrisburg
2. Identify hotspots of pollution in these formerly redlined neighborhoods (PM2.5, NO2, O3)
3. Empower individuals/community through real-time air pollution data that is accessible from their cell phones or computers from the closest station in the neighborhood,
CI4CJ is monitoring pollution in historically redlined areas of West Philadelphia and Harrisburg. To read about our current project, visit: https://gsjoko.net/research-to-inform-community-action-monitoring-air-quality-in-redlined-areas-of-harrisburg-and-west-philly/
